Unpaid internships and selflessness

Unpaid internships. Putting aside the privilege concerns and the issue of paid workers losing jobs to unpaid interns (which obviously need to be considered), unpaid internships can be immensely valuable for the intern, IF valuable work is actually being done.

In a recent NYT piece, I was hugely impressed by this quote from Dominic Peacock, who’s working as an unpaid intern at the National Congress of American Indians, “As long as I’m doing something that benefits the tribe, that’s OK with me.”

Combining selflessness (i.e. thinking of others) with crazy hard work is a powerful combo. Whoever hires this kid in the future will be fortunate.
