The fourth and final jarring item hiring managers say college grads lack is teamwork skills.
At first blush, I’m sure people are thinking, “I’ve played on teams my whole life so I definitely get it.” And on one level sports certainly help.
But I think what hiring managers see is people who do fine relating to those who are exactly like them, and not so fine dealing with those who are different.
One way to address this? Get a job. In college. With older people, people of different colors, people of different genders, people of different socioeconomic backgrounds, etc. Deal with these people. Learn how to work with them. This is what your life after school will be; trust me, your workplace won’t look like your sorority or even your dorm. Might as well learn it now.
