Networking doesn’t have to be a chore

Networking. Few words inspire cringing college student faces as much as networking.

But networking isn’t what you think.

The other day I spoke with some super bright and engaged interns at the 92nd Street Y (wow – what a facility – and thanks to Private Prep’s Zach Gilman as well as to Josh Smith). I somewhat off-handedly mentioned my love of and connection to basketball; after the talk one intern connected with me precisely about this topic.

Why mention this? This is networking. Not handing out business cards. Not “connecting” on LinkedIn. Not mumbling a hello or a thank you. Having two minute conversations, about stuff you like. So stop worrying about the “right” way to meet people, and start meeting them by talking about your interests. You’ll be stunned at the results.
